Review highlights

Based on 206 reviews

Taqueria el Jalapeño is widely appreciated for bringing authentic Mexican flavors to a town with limited options in this cuisine. Reviewers commonly praise the freshness and rich taste of the dishes, particularly tacos, gorditas, and traditional salsas. The restaurant's friendly owner and attentive service contribute positively to the dining experience, as does the clean and well-maintained atmosphere. However, some customers have noted inconsistencies, such as smaller portion sizes without price adjustments and a somewhat confusing menu. Additionally, the absence of certain items like true white queso and alcohol is mentioned, though these do not significantly detract from the overall appeal. Overall, the taqueria is regarded as a valuable local gem offering satisfying Mexican fare.

My husband and I used to come here a lot. My husband’s favorite thing on the menu was the tres leche! Lately though, they have been serving the absolute TINIEST portions and of course charging the same price. I mentioned it tonight to the Latina girl who claims she was the manager, how the slices were way smaller lately than they used to be. I asked her to let the owner know that his customers are disappointed, and she told me that one other person had also complained and she told him and he did not care and did not want to go back to larger portions. It wasn’t the fact that, if this was true, that makes the owner careless about making customers happy, but it was her horrible attitude that made me walk out. Literally like, “Yeah we don’t care! Get over it!”She clearly needs to learn how to treat customers when they aren’t happy before she can be a successful “manager” of anything. Instead of being kind, she lost the owner a customer. I’ll also be telling others in town about my experience. Three stars because the food is decent and authentic but service is always slowwww. This isn’t the traditional Mexican restaurant with quick service. Be prepared to wait.

Been here twice and love it! Very interesting taco choices - all have been delicious so far. The best Mexican place in town. Owner is super friendly. Definitely a hidden gem!

Amazing addition to our town! We don’t have many (or any) true Mexican food options around here, so this new restaurant has been such a great addition! The food is absolutely delicious — I’m obsessed with their gorditas! Everything tastes fresh and full of flavor. The owner is also really kind and always checks in to make sure everything’s perfect. You can tell they care about their customers. Definitely one of my new favorite spots to dine in or take out!

This is an awesome little spot, it's so clean and well maintained. Service was great, and the food was even better! Legit Mexican tacos, the salsa served with chips in the beginning is a must have. Overall great experience and will be back for more! The only thing I did notice is they do not have true white queso, only nacho cheese dip, nor do they sell alcohol, but do NOT let these things stop you from having a great meal.

I went here for a late lunch as I generally drive by it three or four times a week. This Taqueria is an odd little place. Its saving grace is that the food is very good. The salsa is fresh and has the right spice level. I ordered the Chili Rellenos and they were huge and filling, with lots of cheese. I also got a beef taco and they fried the shell up for me. The menu is confusing and not that appealing- kind of like it was a high school Microsoft Word project. And I have no idea why there is a French chef as you come in. There was more rice in my salt shaker than salt; I don’t know whose idea that was. So overall, the food is good, but there are some aesthetic and fundamental issues that I hope they solve.

We decided to try this place on Memorial Day weekend. The staff was sooo friendly!! we started seated outside but realized it was too cool to eat there and they moved us right inside and had no problem with it. they even changed one of the TVs to have a kids movie on while we were there. The food was delicious and we did not have to wait long at all. The portions were big enough that we had enough to take home. The kids said they loved the place and want to go back. The waiter who heard our kids commenting on the cool blue Mustang out front even took them outside and let them check out his Ride! we were very impressed and will definitely be back!

Weirdly, there is an abundance of Mexican restaurants in Mount Airy. I have been to them all, and I prefer this one the most. The food options and taste are more unique and authentic. I feel like many other Hispanic restaurants have Americanized their food. This place has not. It’s legit. For carry out, portion size is large, price is reasonable, but your pick up time will be an hour or more. Similarly, when you eat in, you will wait a while for the food to be brought to your table. Some other reviewer commented that it’s a brother and sister running the business. That may be true? I have only ever seen two people working there. There could be more? But the service is slow.

I really liked this cozy little restaurant in Mount Airy. Service with friendly, but seems like there are only two people work in a restaurant. Which can cause a little delay for the food to come out. We placed our to go order 30 minutes prior to pick up, but after I arrived, I still have to wait for additional times. Following are what we ordered: Beef soup - delicious, perfect for the winter days, they have come with a decent amount of beef Steak fajita - I wasn’t sure if it was due to our orders were takeout, the steak was not pre-sliced, and it was a bit hard to chew. But the flavor was on point. Street tacos - tasty Tamales - small, homemade style, pretty good Drinks- they offer a variety of fresh meat juice/drinks, including Tamarine, mango, lime, and more. Dessert- homemade flan, yum They have very limited parking right in front of the restaurant. However, they do have a overflow parking area right next to the building, which was mainly used by enterprise rental car. Be aware the left her out of their parking lot can be difficult given. It is a high traffic road. Will go back for a dining in experience and give it an updated review.
